What did you do this past week?

This past week, for this class, I spend a day or two studying for the exam, took the exam, and then hammered out a significant amount of the allocator project with my partner. We’re still blocked on an issue that we’re both really confused about, but we’re making steady progress, and I have no doubt we’ll finish well in time. Other than that, I’ve just been trying to stay afloat through all the work I have to do.

What’s in your way?

There’s not much in my way, other than the issue we’re blocked on that I talked about above. Other than that, it’s just the amount of work I have to do. The fact that I have to recruit concurrently just makes it worse, but I’m surviving.

What will you do next week?

Next week, I plan to finish the Allocator project with my partner. After that, I want to find a new partner and get started on the other project immediately. It might just be because we had an exam in the middle of the Allocator timeline, but it felt like we had much less time to work on this project than the other ones, so I want to get it out of the way.

If you read it, what did you think of The Liskov Substitution Principle?

Honestly, I didn’t really enjoy it. It was too obscure and specific for me to appreciate its contents. I’ve read the same, or similar, article for SWE last semester, and I didn’t like it then either, because the article doesn’t really describe how to apply the principle to problems other than squares and rectangles.

What was your experience of Test #1?

Test #1 was much harder than I thought it would be. From the SWE exams last semester, I thought the test would be around the same level of difficulty as the Hackerranks in class, but I found it significantly harder, largely due to templating and iterators. It might just be because C++ syntax is harder to grasp than Python’s, though.

What made you happy this week?

This week, I was happy to spend some time out with friends. I put off some work because of that, but hopefully I’ll be able to catch up in time.

What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?

My tip of the week is to check out the Remarkable 2. It’s an e-ink tablet that I spent way too much money on, but I’m really excited for it to come.
